Report: NJ Denies Morristown's Request To Close Street For Outdoor Dining

Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty's request to close down parts of South Street to expand outdoor dining has been denied by the New Jersey Department of Transportation, the Daily Record reports.

Many municipalities across New Jersey began shutting down local roads to help create space for restaurants to accommodate diners outdoors, once they are allowed to reopen June 15 after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Expanding outdoor dining is particularly difficult in Morristown, where many of the streets are owned by the county or state, Dougherty told the Daily Record. The roads can close once the state or county issues a permit.

Dougherty said the township is exploring other avenues to aid the struggling restaurants.
